“I found the requirement for a nonpartisan poster on the "Design for Democracy" theme to be particularly paradoxical at a time when the only thing that most Americans, regardless of political ideology, seem to agree on is that the other side is responsible for imperiling the very fabric of an American democracy. My responsibility as a visual communicator, I believe, is to present information that serves a function, and supports viewer action. Working to design a poster for democracy within a nonpartisan framework challenged me; how could I complete the project within the provided parameters while maintaining a strong connection to my responsibility as a designer? In my efforts to meet the challenge, I created this piece to present the comedy of our American democracy through the lens of perpetual performance and constant commodification.” -Kayla
